Q: Will I get a 4 year degree from UND?

UND Aerospace offers 4 different degrees in Aeronautics (Commercial Aviation, Flight Education, Air Traffic Control, and Aviation Systems Management), two degrees in Business (Aviation Management and Airport Management), a Masters in Aviation and a Minor in Aviation.

Back to Questions

Q: Will I start flight training my first semester at UND?

A: Your flight training depends on when you enroll and which semester you start school. Most students start their college education in the fall semester. Over the past few years, we have had between 450 to 500 new students who want to start their flight training in the fall. Approximately half of those students will start in the fall semester and the remainder will start in the spring semester. When you start your training depends on how early you register for fall semester classes (earlier is better). Students who begin their training in the summer semester have no problems getting into the ground school classes and flight labs their first semester.

Q: When do I get to fly the airplanes?

A: Most students are in the skies within a week or two of their arrival at UND. Your third lesson in the Private Pilot training course involves an actual flight. Your first lesson is a briefing and the second lesson is in a Flight Training Device (simulator).

Back to Questions

Q: How often will I meet with my flight instructor?

A: Each student meets with their flight instructor on a permanent launch schedule three days per week (MWF or TRS). Students who fly in the summer semester meet with their instructors five days per week (M-F).

Q: Should I get a medical certificate before coming to UND?

A: YES, YES, YES. Before you start any type of flight training, make an appointment for a medical certificate. Since this is not a routine physical that can be done by any doctor, you need to set up an appointment with an Airman Medical Examiner (AME). You will be given a choice of three different classes of medical. Class I, II or III. The cheaper and less stringent medical is the class III which is all you need, however, we suggest that you get a class I, which is the medical required to be a Captain for an airline. It is best to find out right away if you are going to have any problems obtaining a class I medical If your intention is to be an airline Captain. You should also inform the AME that you need a student pilot certificate as well. Contact your local airport and they should be able to direct you to an AME.

Q: Should I do any flight training before coming to UND?

A: We would suggest that you at least do some type of introduction training to see if flying is for you. We do not suggest that you get your Private Pilot's license before coming to UND. Our transfer rules will require that you take the Private Pilot Ground School as well as complete a shorter version of the flight syllabus and complete a Private Pilot check ride to receive college credit. Many of our past transfer students suggested to us that we require the Private training even if you already have a Private Pilot Certificate. The primary reason is that UND has a very structured environment, and it can be much different than what you experienced at your local airport under Part 61.

Back to Questions

Q: Will UND accept previous training done from another flight school?

A: Yes, however, this can be a very complicated process. We suggest that you call Student Services at (701) 777-4934 to discuss your particular situation before enrolling at UND.

Back to Questions

Q: Is there anything other than a Flight Medical/Student Pilot Certificate that I should bring to UND?

A: Yes, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requires that UND Aerospace verifies that you are a U.S. citizen prior to flight training. We ask that you bring your actual birth certificate with the raised seal or a current and valid US passport along with your state issued driver's license. We will not be allowed to start your flight training until we have verified that you are a US citizen. If you are a foreign student, you will need to register online with the Transportation Security Administration at http://www.flightschoolcandidates.gov. The fee to register is $130, and you must start your flight training within 180 days of registering or you will have to register over again and pay an additional $130.

Back to Questions

Q: How long will it take to complete my flight training at UND?

A: UND Aerospace's flight training program is designed to follow a 4 year curriculum (Private, Instrument, Commercial, Multi-Engine, Flight Instructor, and Instrument Flight Instructor). However, some students choose to complete their flight training in less than 4 years by going to summer school.
