UND Flying Team Wins 2006 National Flying Championship
On May 13th, 2006, UND’s Flying Team won their 15th national championship in the past 22 years. The UND Flying Team regained the national title after competing against all of the nation’s top flying programs from 11 regions around the country in the National Collegiate Flying Association’s (NIFA) Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference (SAFECON).
The Flying Team consists of approximately 30 members of the UND student body. Members are volunteers who have made a commitment of time and effort to be a part of the team. The team participates in two competitions annually, a regional qualifying competition in the fall, and a national competition in the spring, to determine the national championship.
The UND Flying Team has a rich tradition, having won the National SAFECON championship 15 out of the last 22 competitions. The UND Flying Team is a member of the National Intercollegiate Flying Association, the SAFECON for the regional and national SAFECON competitions. The SAFECONs place a special emphasis on safety of flight operations. The competition consists of eleven events, four flying events and seven ground events, which test a variety of skills both in the air and on the ground. The young men and women that have made this possible are a credit to the University and UND Aerospace.
